Hi, I have a 98 jeep wrangler and live in NYC. I never go offroad and would like to modify the jeep to run like a car. I know you may say, just buy a car. but jeep looks good :)
I believe I can lower the jeep at least 6%26quot; and change the tires to 17%26quot; regular car tires. What mechanical parts I need to change? I believe the suspension systems. They are made to sit tall and handle anything offroad. Getting a lowering kit is one of the stupidest things you can do to a Wrangler. If you want a Jeep because it looks good, it'll look like s*** if its lowered. And I don't think they even make 17%26quot; tires...those would be tiny. If you want a Wrangler keep it stock or lift it up. NOT down. You'll embarrass yourself. Even if you would lower it, it wouldnt run like a car, it'll just sit lower. The steering setup isn't made to handle like a car.
The design is body-on-frame, so it won't ride like a car.
The suspension isn't even vaguely designed for car-like road performance, and there ain't any fixing it with aftermarket kits.
The wheel base and track are designed for off-road capability with on-road handling and behavior as a (far behind) secondary thought.
The transmission isn't designed to be as gentle as a car, so you'll still have harsher shifts.

If you lower it 6%26quot; you will have no suspension travel left. BUT it can be done cheap!
remove your coil springs and cut 3 wraps out of each coil. Buy 4 shorter shocks. $200 in parts
buy 5 17%26quot; wheels 5 on 41/2 bolt pattern Cost depends on what you want
buy some low profile tires
you will also need to shorten the trac bars front and rear along with the sway bar links
