It's never a good idea to buy just one tyre...it's not even a good idea to buy 2...you really should buy all 4 at the same time. You'll end up with more traction on one side than the other, which is never a good idea. Total for 4 new tyres including installation, balance, etc for a Corolla should run about $600 at most shops.
As an alternative, as tyres can be expensive. Is to go used tyres. Now...I understand there is a negative stigma towards used products. But used tyres are actually a very good deal. Most used tyres have more than 70% of their life left. Check your yellow pages...if you negotiate a little, most places will give you 4 tyres installed for about $100.
