You know insert a penny to see how bold they areWhen is it time to retire?i own a repair shop and i like many other people use the penny test,and usually go by that pretty much,i can average about 30 thousand out of a good set of tires usually,so I'm satisfied with getting that much mileage out of them,then i usually give them to someone who needs a good set to last for a while,but even the cops use the penny test anymore if you get in an accident and there trying to determine who,s at fault they will gage your tires to see if that could have caused you to have an accident,and insurance company's are getting real strict on this also,in some cases the wont pay off if you have an accident,and have bad tires,this is a way for them to get out of paying,good luck i hope this helps.When is it time to retire?your welcome.

Fact is that tires had wear marks built into them so that you can visually decide when they are getting worn down. The DIME test is a good one too but if you feel that the tires are a little too worse for wear before that you can always change them early.
