Car repair cost on hole in floorboard?

I had a flat tire and when trying to change the tire the jack slipped and punched a hole right through my floorboard. What will most likely the repair be (patch piece or extensive work) and how much will it cost?Car repair cost on hole in floorboard? This is going to depend on how big the hole is....and rest assured you are not the first person to do this.

If you were using the jack that came with the car the repair will most likely not be all that costly. If you can avoid it don't take it to a mechanic, take it to a metal working shop in your area. They'll remove the carpeting from that area (not permanently), beat down the raised section of the floor pan and then weld a patch on the underside of the hole.

If someone gets close to it with Bondo or any other filler chase them off with a stick, filler will not hold in this situation and was never intended to repair a hole in your floor board.

All in all I'd anticipate about $70 or so to repair the hole. After repair if they do not coat it in a primer or anti-rust agent of some sort you need to do it yourself. The floor pans in most vehicles are typically made of very thin sheet metal and once they start to rust you'll have a very tough time stopping it. If you ignore the problem altogether rust will form quickly and within a couple months to a year (depending on where you live) the entire pan will become brittle and need replacement.

Next time you need to jack the car up look right underneath the rocker (base of the door). You should see a lip (probably notched) that was placed there specifically for use with your OEM jack.

Hope this helps!Car repair cost on hole in floorboard?I'd imagine they just slap a little body putty or bondo on it for a fast cheap fix; and possibly weld a plate for a more expensive permenant fix, Neither should be all that expensiveCar repair cost on hole in floorboard?Hi,

not such a simple question...or, maybe, not such a simple answer...it will depend to a large extent on the reason the jack went through the floor.

If it pressed on solid metal and the sheer weight of the car punched it through, you are in luck...the repair will be quick and simple...more later. If, however, it pushed its way through the floor because the floor was in a corroded condition and weakened by rust you will have a more expensive option.

If the metal is solid and there is no obvious corrosion: Remove all carpet from above the hole and take the car to a welder (it doesn't have to be a body repairer, but whoever you can find) all this will need is a small patch of sheet steel welded over the hole. I don't know which country you live in, but the cost of this should be only around 5-10 (approx $10-20)

Of course, there is the alternative (not the best, but practical) of a bit of filler and a 'smooth-over' repair! (as suggested by your first 'answerer')

If the jack pushed through because the floor was corroded you really need to get rid of the corrosion before the repair (You will get a better repair here from a body repair specialist) the cost will depend on the total area of corrosion. All the area will need to be cut out and new pieces shaped and welded in. Obviously more expensive then either of the first two alternatives, but should not be TOO expensive.

Obviously you are now aware of the possible dangers of jacking your car in an inappropriate place, so be very careful to use a suitable strengthened area should you need to repeat the operation.

Good luck (hope the metal is sound) The reason for removing the carpet is so it doesn't catch fire whiole being welded.

Cheers,

BobSpain
